Cocktails vs Mocktails?

A party is never without drinks and cocktails are probably one of the most popular drinks at parties. A cocktail is an alcoholic mixed drink. It contains two or more ingredients and at least one of these ingredients is a spirit (also known as liquor).  Originally, a cocktail contained water, spirits, sugar and bitters (a bitter or bittersweet-tasing alcoholic beverage that is flavored with herbal essences). But nowadays, the word “cocktail” is used to refer to almost all kinds of mixed drinks that contain alcohol. As of now, a cocktail may contain one or more spirits and one or more mixers (the non-alcoholic ingredients in cocktails) which could either be soda, fruit juice or something else.

From the word “mock”, meaning to mimic or to imitate, comes the term “mocktails”. A mocktail is actually a drink that imitates a cocktail except that it doesn’t have any alcohol. This flavourful drink is sometimes called a “punch” or “virgin cocktail” and comes in various varieties like frozen, hot, fizzy, non-fizzy and cream-based. Mocktails are good for children, pregnant women, recovering alcoholics, for those people whose religions prohibit drinking or for any guests who simply dont drink alcohol.  One of the most popular mocktails is the “Shirley Temple”, a classic mix of lemon-lime soda, ginger ale and a dash of grenadine. It is often garnished with a maraschino cherry. The  “Roy Rogers”, a traditional mocktail mix that contains cola splashed with a bit of grenadine is also a popular mocktail. And like Shirley Temple, it is also usually garnished with a maraschino cherry.
